URANIUM MINING BAN TO REMAIN IN NSW
Friday, 05 August 2011 13:57

Minister for North Coast and Ballina MP, Don Page, confirmed today that the NSW Government would continue the ban on uranium exploration and mining in NSW after a Federal Government request to lift the ban.

"NSW will keep the ban on uranium exploration and mining, which I strongly believe is the correct policy," Mr Page said.

"Personally, I've always opposed nuclear power as I believe it has inherent problems and there are many renewable sources of energy, which are much better alternatives."

"Recent events in Japan are evidence of the dangers of relying on nuclear power.

"There are also problems of waste disposal and the ever-present possibility of its use for nuclear weapons," Mr Page said.

"Australia and NSW is better off moving more towards renewable sources of energy like solar power, which we have in abundance," he said
