COMMUNITY WINS BATTLE OVER RIPPLE STRIP     ( 11/08/2008)

Don Page welcomes the decision by the RTA to remove the ripple strips on the Pacific Highway upgrade at Ocean Shores.

The RTA have announced that they will remove the ripple strips during the next two months.  They will be replaced with normal line marking.

“This is a win for the Ocean Shores community and I am happy to have assisted them in achieving this outcome,” Mr Page said.

“Over the last year, I have repeatedly raised the issue in Parliament.  I have also written to the Minister for Roads to highlight the issues residents were dealing with,” he said.

“It is clear that using the strips in an urban area was a mistake.  It will be a huge relief for the residents of Ocean Shores, when they are finally removed.

“The removal of the ripple strips is not the end of the story.  Sound walls are still wanted by residents as Ocean Shores is the only residential area in Australia where a highway upgrade has not included sound walls,” Mr Page said.

“This experience emphasises the need to put in place noise mitigation measures at the outset whilst the project is under construction and not to put ripple strips in urban areas.

“The lesson is that money can be saved by not putting ripple strips into urban areas,” Mr Page said.
