Police Medal Awarded To George Dunger (16/03/2009)
Member for Ballina, Don Page MP, today awarded Mr George Dunger of Lennox Head with a NSW Police Medal for 33 years of diligent service to the NSW Police Force.
The medal recognises diligent and ethical service to the Police Force and was introduced in 2002 for Police Officers with 10 years or more service. The NSW Police Commissioner decided in 2007 that the medal should be awarded to living former members.
“I am very pleased to award this medal to Mr Dunger today,” Mr Page said.
“Our police officers put their lives on the line every day they go to work, to serve their communities. This award recognises the sacrifice and efforts they make to help individuals and keep communities safe,” he said.
Mr Dunger retired in June 1990 having achieved the rank of Inspector. He started his career in 1957 as a General Duties Officer, Traffic Duties officer in Darlinghurst and Kings Cross. Through his career he served in various roles including as a senior traffic adjudicator, as Commander of Traffic Operations Group and finally as a staff officer to Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Command.
“Mr Dunger’s career was predominantly in Traffic Operations. During his time with the NSW Police he saw the introduction of compulsory seatbelts and random breath testing. These two safety measures have made the biggest contribution to the reduction of the road death toll,” Mr Page said.
“It gives me great pleasure to present this medal to an officer with such a long and distinguished service history,” Mr Page said.
