MAJOR PROJECTS IN BALLINA ELECTORATE FUNDED IN STATE BUDGET - 17th June 2014

The Ballina Electorate is a winner in the NSW budget with the State Government announcing more than $300 million for major projects targeting health, roads and tourism, the Member for Ballina, Don Page, said today.

“The projects, which include a new 50-bed central hospital at Ewingsdale near Byron Bay, $205 million for the completion of the Tintenbar to Ewingsdale upgrade of the Pacific Highway and $110 million for a Regional Tourism Fund in NSW which could fund a rail trail on the Casino to Murwillumbah corridor, will benefit the entire region,” Mr Page said.

The NSW Budget includes:

  • Funding for the construction of the Byron Central Hospital which will service Byron Bay, Bangalow, Mullumbimby, Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads and surrounding areas.  It is expected to include accident and emergency services, 50 acute medical beds, low risk maternity services, x-ray/medical imaging services, a day surgery for public and private patients and a 20-bed mental health unit.
  • $110 million for a Regional Tourism Fund for projects such as a rail trail on the Casino to Murwillumbah corridor.
  • $205 million for the completion of the Tintenbar to Ewingsdale section of the Pacific Highway upgrade (State and Federally funded project).
  • $220 million for the Woolgoolga to Ballina section of the Pacific Highway upgrade (State and Federally funded project).
  • $2.7 million for pavement rebuilding on the Pacific Highway at Pimlico and north of Wardell.
  • $923,000 for social housing in the Ballina Electorate.
  • $687,000 for land and work associated with the construction of a new fire station in Ballina.
  • $285,000 for shoulder widening on Myocum Road.
  • $210,000 towards a Student Services Centre at Wollongbar TAFE.

“At a time when the NSW Government is cautious with its spending, to receive this level of new funding is very exciting,” Mr Page said.

“Each project will have a broad regional benefit with the new Byron Central Hospital providing  services for patients from around the Byron Shire and beyond.

“This budget is a great boost for local infrastructure and I am especially excited to be able to deliver a new hospital.

“I am pleased the NSW Government is investing in projects in this region that will improve road safety, health services and create local jobs,” Mr Page said.
